Clipboard Security Warning in IE 7.

One of the most frustrating security features in the new Internet Explorer 7. IE 6 actually has this functionality but it is defaulted to off.

Firstly we will go through why Microsoft has this type of security to start with. This is designed to stop web pages that you visit from taking what you have on your clipboard without your knowledge. The problem of course is that it does not differentiate between you doing this of your own free will or a website just doing it behind the scenes.

On my machine, I have turned this off. The way I see it, I rarely have anything on my clipboard that is of any use to anyone else. You of course have a choice, you may keep this functionality of IE 7 on or you can turn it off. If you keep it on, every form or text box on the internet that you try to paste data into you will run into this dialog box. normally this is not a problem, but when you are entering a resume which is very clipboard intensive, then you will see it a lot... If you are very security conscious, simply turn it off while you get your resume into the system and then go back and turn it on again.

How to turn it off:

Turning this feature on and off is very easy once you know where to look. Here are the steps:

  • Go to Tools -> Internet Options
  • Go to Security tab
  • Select "Internet" zone, then click on "Custom level..." button
  • Scroll down to "Scripting" section
  • Under "Allow Programmatic clipboard access" option, select (tick) "Enable"
  • Click OK twice to exit from Internet Options
